Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced manager with extensive knowledge of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education to join our team. You will be aware of the current challenges and developments in Medical Education and have a keen interest in how technology can support this agenda. With proven experience of managing successful teams and projects, this role offers the opportunity to make a real difference to the delivery of Medical Education in a large teaching hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will manage a number of teams within the Department of Clinical Education as well as leading on a range of projects related to the delivery of Medical Education. As a member of the senior management team in the Department, the Medical Education Manager will represent the team at Trust committees and work closely with our external stakeholders including Health Education England and local Universities.

KEY RESULT AREAS

Service Delivery & Development

1. To directly support the Director of Clinical Education, Clinical Tutors and General Manager (Clinical Education) Quality Manager in the implementation of the UHL Medical Education Strategy. Formally deputising for the General Manager as required.

2. To provide leadership on designated Trust-wide education developments including education and service improvement.

3. Support the HEE External Quality Monitoring process.

4. During the External Quality Visits the post holder will represent the DCE as required by attending interview sessions between trainees, trainers and HEE.

5. Oversee the delivery of induction for junior doctors. Continue to develop and enhance the online delivery format, supporting senior clinical and non clinical colleagues to develop content

6. Represent the Department of Clinical Education on UHL IT development groups, ensuring that educational need is considered in application or software upgrades or initiatives

7. Provide strategic direction for an increasingly technology focused learning environment

8. Critically analyse, improve systems and introduce new procedures and ways of working in order to ensure cost effectiveness.

9. Ensure that the PGECs are utilised as outlined in the Education Contract and that occupancy levels are monitored

10. Plan over the short, medium and long term and adjust plans and resource requirements accordingly. To have overall management responsibility for the three Postgraduate Education Centres (PGEC) and the senior administrators to achieve the Medical Education Strategy objectives

11. To have overall management responsibility for the cross-site Undergraduate Medical Education Manager and team of Undergraduate Co-ordinators

12. Manage the deployment of administrative staff to ensure cost effective delivery and workload allocation across all sites. Ensure that administrative support defined within the Education Contract and EPPA is maintained whilst accommodating UHL service reconfiguration impact on education provision.

Foundation Programme

1. Liaise with HR to deliver the National 4 Day Shadowing programme for FY1 doctors. Coordinate and chair meetings where this programme is planned and evaluated; this will include liaising with other departments within UHL ( Pharmacy, IM&T), the Foundation School team at HEE, UHL Foundation Programme Directors and HR

2. In conjunction with the Foundation Training Programme Director, lead the Foundation Year sign off process

3. Manage UHLs role in the East Midlands Foundation Training Programme expansion. Provide expertise and support to the FTP Expansion Lead and project officer, who are both UHL employees, working in collaboration with HEE. Liaise with medical educationcolleagues across the East Midlands to meet nationally agreed deadlines.

4. Be responsible for the processes that govern Foundation doctors employed by UHL but working within General Practice and Leicester Partnership Trust

Governance

1. Responsible for ensuring appropriate systems are in place to ensure reports for contracts are provided in a timely and professional manner

2. Responsible for ensuring that appropriate systems are in place to update educational information in respect of any local or national policy/guideline changes

Finance

1. To authorise spend against cost centres associated with PGEC and Undergraduate budgets

2. To be responsible for the budget and accounts associated with the Doctors Mess

3. To identify income potential and Cost Improvement Programmes (CIP) savings on a year by year basis.

4. Adhere to UHL Standing Financial Instructions and ensure that all managed staff are aware of and adhering to policies and imposed restrictions.

5. Produce a monthly forecast and recovery plan.

Patient/Customer Service

1. Responsible for ensuring that consistently high standards of customer service are delivered by the PGEC and Undergraduate administrative staff to service users and stakeholders
